This keeps getting compared to Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, a few pages into the story and I knew why; this could have been called Miss Eleanor West’s Home for Peculiar Children, the similarities could not be missed, but fast forward a few chapters and you will have a different story (Kind of).
If you follow my reviews, you know that I like fast-pacing, just give me what is important to the story and no need for all the tropes. I guessed this will be fast since a whole story is written in a small number of pages, but it was a bit too fast for me. We are thrown into the world and we don’t know anything about it, they are using some bizarre terms, the good thing is that our MC was also confused and then both us the readers and the MC start to get comfortable with the world building.
I had mixed feelings about the writing style, some times it was lyrical and magical and amazing, while other times I felt like the author need to chill and simplify things, here is an example:
“You’re nobody’s rainbow.
You’re nobody’s princess.
You’re nobody’s doorway but your own, and the only one who gets to tell you how your story ends is you.”
“Screams had not been not uncommon in the Halls of the Dead.”
By the way, this is not a sunshine and flowers kind of book. I went into it with little knowledge of the plot. It started with something in the lines of what I had imagined and suddenly it starts getting darker and darker. It has a creepy sensation to the story, not in a I’m-not-going-to-sleep-tonight kind of way but it certainly takes a turn for the darker side with murder & stuff. I was even unprepared for some of the lines the characters said, they talk about masturbation and sex… etc!
Finally, the characters were unique, they were peculiars, each in a different way. I thought they would have superpowers as in MPHFPC but they mostly don’t although some elements of this can be found. But as I mentioned above; the story gets dark pretty fast so don’t get attach to those characters in case they don’t make it. And don’t get your hopes up very much because the final reveal was a bit underwhelming.
Another thing worth mentioning is that this has a freaking ASEXUAL character, a thing I have been anticipating for ages! I really like this little addition that added a lot of diversity.
So my final thought: This is a good fast-paced & short story that can be read in one sitting, I think this book is an introduction to something better and bigger. The series is still going strong, so if you haven’t read this yet, give it a try, nothing to lose!
