“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”

This was probably my 2018’s favorite quote!!

🌟 Holly cow, that was Black!! (puns intended)

🌟 This book had a pretty solid prologue, the first chapters were amazing and I understood all the hype surrounding this book until… I didn’t.
That happened after like 25% of the book where the story started to get slow and not many things were happening, if it only continued as it started it would surely have been a 5 stars rating.

The writing style was enjoyable too, specially at the beginning and ending, Holly’s prose is amazing and she definitely knows her way with words!

β€œNice things don’t happen in storybooks. Or when they do happen, something bad happens next. Because otherwise the story would be boring, and no one would read it.”

🌟 This is my first book by Holly black, The faerie queen, a title I believe is well deserved.
Comparing this to An Enchantment of Ravens I could see that Holly is a Fae expert and her world building was so much intricate and better than other stories I read in that genre!

🌟 The characters seems to be a bit problematic; Jude was annoying and repetitive and many times she was childish.
I liked the prince and the story was darker than I could imagine, and darker stories are just my thing!

🌟 The ending though! I can talk about that ending for ages! The ending saved the book for me and I will definitely continue the series after that ending!

🌟 Summary: My first book by Holly Black and definitely not the last! Holly has a great writing style and world building. I had minor problems with the pacing and the characters which I hope will be fixed in the next books! I know this book will have a large fan base though and that is great!

  1. Great review, Hamad!
I agree with everything. My main problem was the pacing, because often times it was a bit slow. (Also, isn’t it a hilarious coincidence that we both decided to post our Cruel Prince reviews within the same hour? πŸ˜†)
Are you going to read The Wicked King soon?

  2. Thanks!
    OMG, that’s a great coincidence!
I actually finished The Wicked King too and loved it way more and everything was better.
I posted this review because I wanted to have both reviews on my blog.

  3. This was my first HB book too! I feel that way about her pacing in the books. I just finished The Wicked King and even with all of its twists I apparently am the only person who isn’t shouting from the rooftops about it’s amazingness. It was good, yes, (and def better than An Enchantment of Ravens), but it still had some issues. Great review!! πŸ™‚

  4. I had near IDENTICAL thoughts about this one! The pacing was a bit too slow for my liking, and I wasn’t the biggest fan of Jude. I have high hopes for the Wicked King though! Great review!

  5. I also finished TWK and it was definitely better than the cruel prince! I agree that it has problems. My main problem is that I don’t root for any of the characters, If I liked them as much as others did, then I can see why it is getting all this hype!
