I like to think of myself as a man of science and I always wanted to read a scientific book on homosexuality and what we have so far. This topic is usually garnered by religion and philosophy and I wanted a different lens. The book came to me as a recommendation from an Italian friend who happens to be in the medical field and is also an LGBT activist!
The reason why I like this book is the same reason why I did not like some of its parts; it was scientific! Sometimes it was too scientific for the general reader. Don’t get me wrong, I am in the medical field and I have studied neuroscience, endocrinology, biology so I had no problem with the language. But I did not know if it was supposed to be directed at people in the field or the general population. I wanted something more simple so that I can discuss it with people outside the field without having to explain what is ontogenesis, or Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia…etc.
To be fair I think there were some examples and arguments for the layman to understand but I think the main parts, the things that are most convincing were very scientific. However, I think this scientific approach was very well done because the author gave the experiments and facts we have without bias and he went to say that we don’t have anything conclusive yet but that most of the data we have goes with this and this!
Summary: I think it is a very interesting and important book. It really gave me some answers to questions I always had as someone in the medical field. There was a discussion of the role of education and society and it went to discuss the role of hormones and genetics. The language may have been too scientific which makes discussing some of the points hard with the general population but the summary in the last chapter was excellent to simplify things too. It felt a bit like a PHD thesis but a interesting one at that! I am thankful for my friend for the recommendation because this was something I sought for a long time!
