I am continuing my journey through The Shadowhunters world and it is fascinating that Cassie can still capture my attention after so many books. I enjoyed this one as much as I enjoyed the first one and I gave both of them 4 stars, I will explain in the review what I thought was better and what wasn’t.

I am not going to say the writing is as good as usual because I feel Cassie is always improving as a writer. As the rest of her books, it was an easy read although it was a long one. The events in this book takes event after the events of book one and more problems are popping out from everywhere.

This book has a strong opening as we are thrown into action from the start as opposed to the first one where the beginning is kind of slow. That being said, the book slows down after that and picks up toward the ending as all of Cassie’s books do.

β€œSometimes the most ruthless heart speaks the most truth”

The characters are great, they do grow through this book and more revelations are given but I did not like that everyone had a secret in this book that they did not want to share because it felt like a redundant excuse to me as a reader. The characters from book one are of course in this book but the book introduces many new characters and many relationships blooming everywhere. The Centurions suck and I did not like them from the start. Julian is wholesome and should be protected at all costs, Emma is probably the best of the female protagonists so far because she is not a drama queen. The rest of the children all change in this book and we have all kind of presentations in this book, we have autism, plus sized bodies and trans characters and I like that Cassie has always been supportive of the LGBT community.

The plot is good but I felt the book could have been shorter. Most of the action happens in the last chapters and those chapters saved the book for me because it would have been a 3.5 stars read otherwise. I should confess that I saw something coming and I did not really like it, it felt like an overused trope. For a weird reason, this is one of the times that I picked up HP vibes from the story although they’re not very similar.

β€œWe fear things because we value them. We fear losing people because we love them. We fear dying because we value being alive. Don’t wish you didn’t fear anything. All that would mean is that you didn’t feel anything.”

Summary: Lord of Shadows was a good entry in the series and the world overall, I do believe Cassie’s writing improved from the first series till this one. The characters are great and are full of secrets, the plot is strongest at beginning and end and slows down in the middle. I enjoyed this one and certainly looking for the last one as Cassie always does best with the finales!
