“I’m starting to wonder if this is what being in love is. Being okay with ripping yourself to shreds, so the other person can stay whole.”
I am writing this review exactly two months after this book has been published and it already has 90K ratings on GR which is insane! I have been following those numbers and they are jumping tremendously fast! I am pretty sure it will sell over a million copies in no time and that makes me super happy for the author! I couldn’t see all the love and hype the book was getting and not read the book, fortunately I really enjoyed it!
It is a romance novel following a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith who finds herself fake dating a hot but grumpy Adam Carlsen who is a professor at the same university. I guess it is a predictable story given that it do have some of the most infamous romantic tropes.
Hazelwood’s writing is very easy to follow and the story held my attention that I finished the whole book in less than two days. The writing varies between cute, steamy, funny and scientific and I really enjoyed this combination.
“carry yourself with the confidence of a mediocre white man”
Olive was an interesting protagonist and I really related to her which is rare for me in a romance novel. Adam is a kind of Gary Stu but I also ended up liking him pretty much at the end of the novel.
I think I also read this at a perfect time because I really needed it and it tackled some things I have been thinking about lately while not being that serious at the same time. It is rare to find books like this with characters in the scientific field which was also a plus for me!
Summary: Despite the hype and kind of high expectations, I really liked this book! I think it was a mix of a lot of things that I was in need for. I am certainly looking forward to Hazelwood’s next book and I also had some happy tears while reading this which is a rare thing for me! Probably this is my favorite romance novel in this year!!
