I am gonna be honest, I always wanted to read this series but always found an excuse to put off reading it. After reading and really loving The House in the Cerulean Sea, I was convinced that I need to read this series and I am sad that it is over now because it seems I can’t get enough of Klune’s stories. One of the main reasons that kept me from reading this series is something I probably imagine; I thought people hated the finale but with a rating of 4.53 I don’t know where that came from. I also thought the books were big specially the finale but they were just medium sized and I don’t think any took more than 3 days to finish.

This is Carter and Gavin’s book and the story takes place after the events of last book. I think this book had the clearest story line because we already know the antagonist. This also had the best characterization as it solved the problem I mentioned in my review of previous books. Each time we got a new protagonist and the rest of the pack felt like they turned into minor characters but with this entry everyone felt important with Carter being the star of the show.

It is a story about brotherhood, about love and found families and God knows how much I love this trope and Klune apparently is a king when it comes to it. I liked the Juxtaposition of familial ties between Ox and his father and Robert Livingstone and his sons and how sometimes blood ties don’t mean a lot.

I love the writing and I am saying it again and again: this is cheesy but it is good kind of cheesy and if it doesn’t work for you then it is okay but I really loved it. All of the characters are awesome and I really liked the humans in this one and the banter (which is always my favorite part in this series) was taken to a whole new level of filthy and hilarious.

The plot-line can be predictable and the ending is kind of bittersweet but Klune has landed all the endings of the books I read by him and this was also the case here. I don’t know if we will ever visit this world again but I am so glad I was part of it for 4 books.

Summary: Let me summarize the whole series by the words of the author himself:

β€œIt was warm like a summer day. It was candy canes and pinecones, it was epic and awesome, it was dirt and leaves and rain, it was grass and lake water and sunshine.”
